Process Documentation: 04

Over the past week, I have been in contact (email) with Literacy KC. I have a phone conversation planned for this coming week and have emailed a few questions to other volunteers. These questions will hopefully give me a better idea of what actually goes on in the organization (hopefully they will be answered).
  1. Tell me about your specific mission/job at Literacy KC
  2. What are the best ways that you have recently achieve this (current achievements)?
  3. What are some personal or organizational victories experienced by students or tutors?
  4. How do the students behave when they first come to meet with Literacy KC?
  5. Why is your mission important and why in Kansas City?
  6. How do you promote yourselves and find tutors/teachers? How do individuals learn about your organization?
  7. Explain the teaching program and how it works. How long does it take?
  8. What do the students feel after they have completed the course? How does it better their lives?
Also, I have sketched and planned ideas for each of the three models. I tried to exhaust the meaning of each emotion I chose to represent in the environment to explore what the emotion/concept actually meant. My 3 chosen emotions (1 positive, 2 negative) include; victory, embarrassment, and overwhelmed. Within each emotion, I was able to develop a few concepts for the final direction of the environment. In addition to this, I went back to research for a reliable color psychology reference and chose the color for each emotion according to what I want the viewer to feel within the space. SO, these are the final directions:

Victory (
Descriptive keywords: confidence, positive, relief, satisfaction)
  • Yellow as main color (optimistic, safe spaces)
  • Red and orange supporting (minimal red)
  • Start small and progressively grow (in size of steps) to finish
  • Hanging overhead extends and opens up as you walk down
  • Use anamorphosis (perspective) techniques to allow the viewer to see the word victory as they walk down the stair-hallway
  • Once at bottom of stairs, there would still be an overlook/hill area for the viewer to look down

Embarrassment (Descriptive keywords: puzzle, web, failure, awkward, stress)
  • Violet (introversion, inferiority)
  • Pink (emotional insecurity)
  • Gray (lack of confidence)
  • Use illusion
  • Maze, puzzle that cannot be solved (include obstacles)
  • Glass structure
  • Vertical maze (climb through? or walk through?)
  • Each layer of the maze is a letter that spells out s-h-a-m-e (5 levels)

Overwhelmed (Descriptive keywords: sink, submerge, saturate, cover, stifle, encompass)
  • Brown (heaviness)
  • Low ceilings, water ceiling?
  • Tunnel decreasing in size + color transitioning to dark
  • Long, narrow hallway?
  • Include illegible words on structure (dense application of letters/words)

Als0, I have updated my timeline with more detail that the previous posts:
