Project Thinking

STEP 1:
I started thinking about what I was going to work on for my degree project after hearing the presentations form the 2010 senior lass during my sophomore year. Although, at that point, it was based on subject driven interests and was completely overwhelming. I haven't made a lot of progress towards a solid direction since then as my interests and strengths have shifted and absolutely expanded. This isn't necessarily helpful as I try to narrow down a career path that should be supported by this degree project. So, I am going to try to list a few points of interests that could turn into degree project possibilities.

Over the past year, I realized that I really enjoy design work that involves creating identities and branding because it has the ability to include any subject in any form. This means that a career in branding holds the potential of working in a lot of different forms for different clients. Package design is another broad area of interst that could shift into three-dimensional studies (which would be a fun challenge). Also, I would be intrested in working on a project based on social organization or community importvemnet. This includes focus areas liek education, social and political issues. In addition to these, I am also interested in art history (my double major), illustration and photography.

STEP 2: Leading Interests:
Ancient Art History
Hand lettering/calligraphy
Gothic architecture
Children
Interior Design
Cooking
Cleaning Supplies
Futuristic Technologies
Volunteer work
Textures
Family trees
Optical illusions
indian culture
social networking communities

STEP 3: Considered Subjects:
Teenagers
Nurses + Medical technology
Job searches/unemployment
Handwriting analysis
Archive/file organization for large museums

STEP 4: Considered Projects:
helloart rebrand
Branding the design building

STEP 5: Decision:
I would like to continue and branch off of my experiments from Typography 4 last year with optical illusion and anamorphosis studies. This will include the combination of environmental and experiential design. At this point, I am unsure of where it will lead me but this is a specific area that I have been interested in since I started at kcai and would like to be able to explore in it.

Luis Tomasello reminded me how much I love optical illusions with his new piece that is currently being installed at the Nelson-Atkins.

I would like this project to remain separate from my type experiments. Here is a reminder anyway:

  1. how can graphic design be used to subvert, disguise, enhance the perception of space? meaning may come out of the form making journey?

    model or real 3d space?
